from Bobzilla, not that any of us RV folks do this, but there is some concern in regards to water from ice coolers... my thought is to dump your clean ice water when the water trucks come around and spray the ground.....

"Word to the wise. People have been dumping greywater on the playa in disturbingly increasing numbers in the past few years. It was announced today at The Way It Is meeting (the last all staff meeting before the playa) that the BLM is OVER this. LEO will be cracking down on this. So be advised, you gotta carry it out or risk a fine and citation. "

My guess is that you will need to be careful and perhaps prepared to prove the water is truely clean, so coolers with food may cause such a fine.

I'm thinking the best time to even dump clean water is when the watering trucks spraying the roads come by..

its very easy to make a evaporation pool to put the gray water in. i make mine out of 1"x2" wood & cover it with a blue plastic tarp. a 7ft.x9ft.is big enough for 2 people if you take showers every day 4ft.x6ft. is good for 1 person. it must be nailed down so the wind doesn't blow it away.
it works best when placed in the sun. the water evaporates very fast. i do not put the dish washing water in the pool as it will stink,i catch that in a bucket & put it in the porta-potty.

Well, as far as dish water in the potties goes, you're really not supposed to. If it didn't come from your body, and all that nonsense. I think it's really more of a volume issues, since if we all did it, well, you see the logic.

I'm sticking with my program. I take shower and light kitchen water, filter it, and spread it on the road. I've never seen an evap pond actually work, and I've built several.

"I take shower and light kitchen water, filter it, and spread it on the road."

This is still "Grey Water" and will indeed get you a fine if they see it - and by all accounts, they WILL be cracking down. I have seen MANY evep ponds work (black liner seems to be key) but in case it doesn't, you sould be prepaired to take your waste water home with you. If you got it there, you should have a way to take it back. Bring empty containers or something. One way to get the Evap option to work better is to have some kind of wick to get it up in the air - old towels on a rack or something. Just be sure to secure it somehow - rope around the middle or something.

I thought of the potty thing too - then someone pointed out the same "what if we all did it"/volume thing. That would be a problem. maybe get a REALY GOOD filter and drink it - take it to the potty that way ;o)

I'm glad BLM is "cracking down" on this. A few years ago, a camper a few yards from us was pooring out "grey water" which smelled for days. This is a "leave no trace" event. Dumping anything on the Playa is a no-no. What makes RVers (or anyone else) think that you can dump grey-water on the Playa!? No matter how well your "filter" it, there's bound to be something left that contaminates the Playa. What's so hard about taking out what you brought in? If you use an evap pond, great, but the idea is that after the water evaporates, the left-overs are collected and added to your trash - which you take out or burn. If your holding tanks don't have the capacity for your weeks worth of use, have them pumped out. Show some respect for the Playa and the ethos of the event...

i have never dumped gray water on the playa, but i have witnessed the mess a failed evap pond can create!!!! btw isn't it in the survival guide that you CAN filter the gray water through pantry hose, then disinfect it with bleach and then dump it on the road for dust control?!!!! i am pretty sure this is an acceptable and encouraged practice. my understanding is that they are over the contaminated cooler water, and untreated water being dumped

Yep. By the way, this is my first year in a trailer, and my grey water plan hasn't changed. Yes, the survival guide says you can filter and dump. If you're simply dumping untreated grey water, then yes, shame on you. Treated, read filtered, water is fine. Now, volume is discouraged, since it makes a big swampy mess, but spreading on the street is fine, and well within the ethos of the event.

what do you think about dumping unused fresh water in the street before you go home at the end of the event... (lowers weight of rig)

Of course not grey water... thats a big no no...

how is cooler water contaminated ??

As long as you aren't creating a big pool for others to slip in, there is no reason you can't dump unused fresh water in the street. Cooler water is contaminated by food. If you are, like me, using a seperate cooler for canned beverages, that water is fine too.

If it's got food in it, bacteria grows, and that can create a pretty stinky, smelly, and alive, pond. Same with your shower water, and especially kitchen water.
