Hi,
Apparently the heating unit just decided to retire, the day before i leave for burning man. Mechanic says replacement will cost $900 plus $1-200 for overnight shipping.
Anyone know of any other alternatives?

Re: Fridge Just Broke. Leaving Tomorrow.
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 9:36 AMreplace the whole fridge for a propane burner problem? he knows you're under pressure and is trying to jack you...probably a pilot/thermocouple issue, and less than $50 to fix plus labor.
Obviously you could just punt, get a giant cooler and use ice if you had to and can't pull it together to get the replacement parts -

Re: Fridge Just Broke. Leaving Tomorrow.
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 10:43 AMNo, not a propane burner problem...the motor unit or heating unit.... the main thing (i'm such a girl) I forgot what it's called, but apparently they don't make it anymore (it's a chevasse, or something like that) so there's no way to replace it. (Apparently an RV junk yard was sued when a water heater blew up and killed people and now you can't get used RV parts from them--can anyone confirm this???)
Yes, I can do the cooler thing, but i already bought all our food, including lots of frozen items and, yes, i've considered leaving all that at home and re-planning, and re-shopping and all that, but then we're still gonna need a new fridge, so I just decided to break into savings and go for it...
New fridge is being overnighted and will be installed tomorrow. Of course that means some remodeling because, of course, the new one is not the same size as the old one :-(
Ah, well, such is life... -

Re: Fridge Just Broke. Leaving Tomorrow.
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 11:33 AMIt's totally possible that the fridge fried itself. Great explanation of how they work here:
www.rvmobile.com/TECH/TROU...OOLDOC.HTM
Read near the bottom about sodium chromate cooking.
new fridge is probably the best bet. -

Re: Fridge Just Broke. Leaving Tomorrow.
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 12:14 PMThat's about 100 times more complicated than I thought it would be.
Fascinating. -

Thu, August 27, 2009 - 1:06 PMI know...I often wonder who it was that started experimenting with that stuff and invented the weak ammonia/strong ammonia powered fridge. -

Re: Fridge Just Broke. Leaving Tomorrow.
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 7:17 PMI just fixed mine, the heater control panel fuses (2 of them) rattle loose and i have to reset them, everytime it happens i think its the end as the propane will not work and the electric element would work, but no cooling, i did buy a schematic to troubleshoot though, good luck with the new install....ill be on the playa soon!
