I am a 1st time burner who will be driving in from the East. I will be leaving Salt Lake City early on the 31st, but I might not get to BRC until dusk (it's 400 miles!), and based on what I have been told about gate wait, it might be after dark before I get thru.
As a 1st timer, and one not associated with any theme camps, should I just plan on making it part of the way, spending the night on the road, and arriving around noon on Monday the 1st?
Also, can anyone tell me about where in BRC to park if I am not with a camp? I know that the sound of a generator running can be disruptive, so if there is an area where the RV's congregate, that would probably be a better choice.
Any suggestions on places to park?

Re: Where to Park if you are not part of a camp, and arriving at night
Tue, July 28, 2009 - 10:20 PMWhen you get there, you will get a map of the city... it will show the reserved space for theme camps... and the open space.
depending on if you want noise.. 2:00 and 10:00 last rows tend to have large sounds systems pointed out to the playa, and some places around the keyholes at 9:00 and 3:00...
when you drive (slowly, like 5 MPH) look for open space, I personally like having my open front door to the road and making a little front yard, facing the man, so I stay away from the spoke streets.. when you find a nice open space, ask the neighbors if they are saving the space,,
and take paticular note where your exhaust pipes for vehicle and generator will be... I once had a poor unthinking couple put their tent up right at my exhaust pipe and had to warn them....
if you get there in the dark,, you might want to stay out by the outer ring, and wait until daylight to find your spot...
and dont' worry, there are tons of RV's out there.. (but stay away from Alternative Energy Zone, they are a no genie camp, and pretty good size too)
hugs, good luck and have fun.. -

Wed, July 29, 2009 - 12:15 AMYou may wish to rethink your time and distance calculations. Salt Lake City to Wendover is approx 120 miles. Wendover to Wadsworth is approx 356 miles. Wadsworth to Gerlach is approx 75 miles. A little more than 400 miles.

Re: Where to Park if you are not part of a camp, and arriving at night
Wed, July 29, 2009 - 7:18 AMMy suggestion is that if you arrive after dark, drive to any open spot on an outermost street and park. Assuming that more than one of you will be traveling together, grab your flashlights and either bicycle or walk around until you find a spot you like that isn't taken. If you arrive on the evening of the 31st, there will be plenty of real estate available. Once you find a spot, have one of you stay there and hold it while the other returns to the RV and drives (slowly!) to the location. Or, if you have long range walkie-talkies, just have one person head out, find the spot, call back to the RV with the location and wait for you to arrive. No problem either way. Just remember to drive slowly. -

Wed, July 29, 2009 - 8:07 AMMy dos centavos: Wait until daybreak. Peruse your neighbors and neighborhood before staking out your turf....and do everything Sunburn says above. -

Re: Where to Park if you are not part of a camp, and arriving at night
Wed, July 29, 2009 - 8:33 AMI do think that coming in around sunrise is the best! That's our plan, since lines at the gate will be shorter, and traffic on the road lighter. If you're coming via SLC, you'll be coming through Gerlach, and Fernley. Both are relatively big, and you can find a camp ground in those towns. Fernley is pretty close, so you can get up early and head on in.
Oh, and the Google map routes you to Gerlach via Jungo Road. DO. NOT. TAKE. YOUR. R.V. ON. THAT. ROAD. It's a four wheel jeep road. Smooth at first, but horror stories, told to me in the first person, abound. You need to go South to Fernley, then North to the Playa. -

Thu, July 30, 2009 - 9:13 AMAll of the above!
And make sure that you fuel up in Fernly or take extra fuel with you.
Duststorms can have you waiting in line to get in for hours and exodus can also be SEVERAL hours long.

Re: Where to Park if you are not part of a camp, and arriving at night
Sun, August 2, 2009 - 11:35 AMI have arrived early with a theme camp. I have lined up for the gates to open for general admission at midnight. I have showed up a day or two after opening. Each is a different experience.
Arriving when the gates opened, we knew what neighborhood we wanted to be in. I prowled through slowly and found a spot. Immediately, a couple of guys who were car camping asked if it would be OK for me to orient my rig to provide them with maximum shade from the rising sun in the mornings. They ended up pretty much using the back side of my rig as one side of their perimeter. This provided them sun and wind protection. That year, we were closely surrounded by people, and our own little community sprang up with everyone socializing and sharing food, tools, etc..
It is good to be considerate with your generator. Burningman is a noisy place anyway, but also think of your exhaust. I was parked downwind from an elderly winnie which had a very noisy and polluting gennie. They fired it up every morning and engulfed the entire area in fumes. I was off the ground, but the tent campers in the area would get rather irritated. The owner of the winnie didn't seem to care. His fumes were bad enough that he set off my CO detectors once.
I don't use a gennie much since I don't run the AC. I have enough solar to charge my batteries. However, I have fired it up to run an electric ice cream maker. I have had neighbors or camp mates get into heat distress, and have fired up the AC to cool them down a couple of times. I always take some clothes drier exhaust flexible metal tubing and run my exhaust up to the roof. It's cheap and easy. I have done surveys, and my neighbors have always said that my exhaust was undetectable to them when I run the gennie.
When I arrived late one year, and I was more in the mood for some quiet anyway that year, so I parked on the periphery. That was nice too, but not as social from day to day at home. I had to go out to visit, or invite people over. -

Re: Where to Park if you are not part of a camp, and arriving at night
Sun, August 2, 2009 - 11:37 AMOh... if anyone tries the clothes drier exhaust trick, be sure to secure the exhaust tube. It can blow around a bit with the wind comes up.
