hello all,
i just completed my second burn '09 and i'm planning to attend '10 burn in an rv! :-) i'm wondering if you have any tips on which companies to go through? i did some research online and spoke with cruise america.
unfortunately cruise america only has rvs in oakland or san mateo now and i'm flying from nyc so i'd rather pick up an rv in nevada if that is possible instead of flying all the way to the bay area.
i also found two online national rv companies that network with local rv companies, getrv.com and usarvrentals.com, does anyone know about either of these?
right now i'm in discussion with getrv.com about an rv they have avail in las vegas but they won't put me in touch directly with the las vegas branch unless i pay for a down payment to reserve it.
thanks, Selish

Re: tips on rv companies?
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 12:30 PMInstead of renting a plush rv for $3,000 a week or whatever, we bought an older rv for the same amount. Four years later we still have it and have used it for many festivals and taking the family to the beach for the day (an added bonus is that you can legally drink inside your rv at San Diego beaches).
This obviously won't work for everyone, but it sure did for us! -

Re: tips on rv companies?
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 12:33 PMThere's also the possibility of buying a used rv for BM, then selling it afterward.

Fri, September 11, 2009 - 3:05 PMI've seen were people will rent there trailers for BM. They actually even deliver and set them up for you.

Re: tips on rv companies?
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 6:26 PMBeware of those people renting trailers to Burners and the delivery/set up. Naturally you send your payment well in advance. You send the rental company an address to where you wish to have the trailer delivered. In many cases they will drop the trailer in the first open space they see. Friday morning when we got up to continue setting up camp a trailer had mysteriously appeared in the middle of our theme camp the previous night. No one was in it and no truck was to be found. We got in touch with our placer and he knew immeadiately what had happened. They towed it to an impound area set up just for "dropped" trailers. He informed us that this is becoming a huge problem. Tuesday a group wandered into our camp and said their trailer had been dropped there. They had told the rental company they were at 2:15 and Gegnome. A Long Long way from 4:30 and B. We helped them contact the placer for our area and they eventually recovered their trailer, but not after losing nearly a day doing so. The only way they found it was that they had received a text message saying where the trailer had been placed and all their supplies were in it. If it were not for the intermittent messaging, they might still be looking.......

Re: tips on rv companies?
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 11:26 PMI've rented 10 years in a row from El Monte, the last 8 in Las Vegas. I'm also from NY, and it has always been the best deal to fly to Vegas and rent there (rental costs are higher in SF and astronomical in Reno; air fares are low to Vegas). El Monte is expensive, but they keep their equipment in good shape and they like Burning Man.
Vegas to Burning Man is tough to do in one day, so I rent Friday, arrive at BRC when it opens on Sunday, leave Monday and return on
the following Thursday. That's a couple more days than you'd absolutely have to take, but I enjoy the time in Nevada on both sides of the event.

Re: tips on rv companies?
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 6:52 AMDon't try to find an RV rental in Vegas. Get it in Reno. Cruise America does rent from Reno.
I've rented from them like 5 or 6 years.
El Monte has a great reputation as well and has RV's available from Reno as well.
Hugs,
Rig Daddy
