i just completed my second burn '09 and i'm planning to attend '10 burn in an rv! :-) i'm wondering if you have any tips on which companies to go through? i did some research online and spoke with cruise america.

unfortunately cruise america only has rvs in oakland or san mateo now and i'm flying from nyc so i'd rather pick up an rv in nevada if that is possible instead of flying all the way to the bay area.

i also found two online national rv companies that network with local rv companies, getrv.com and usarvrentals.com, does anyone know about either of these?

right now i'm in discussion with getrv.com about an rv they have avail in las vegas but they won't put me in touch directly with the las vegas branch unless i pay for a down payment to reserve it.

thanks, Selish

So here are my questions:
1) Does anyone know an RV repair who has installed one of these units? In the Bay Area?
2) Can anyone recommend a fiberglass shop that can create a berm on the trailer roof where the cooler will sit "flat"? My roof is slightly curved.
3) If I want this to run on solar (60amp requirement), should I consider running the solar panel directly to the cooler, or should I run solar to the deep-cycle battery that runs everything in the trailer? Right now, I have a 6W trickle charger that replenishes the power over the week.

I only run LED lights and turn on the water pump a few times a day, so my needs are currently pretty small.

"Word to the wise. People have been dumping greywater on the playa in disturbingly increasing numbers in the past few years. It was announced today at The Way It Is meeting (the last all staff meeting before the playa) that the BLM is OVER this. LEO will be cracking down on this. So be advised, you gotta carry it out or risk a fine and citation. "

The black water tank is cracked right by the drain. It's fiberglass and low to the ground in the back of the trailer. I'm sure it just got banged on the ground while in tow. I'm also not sure about the water heater, but I'm hoping to have a look at that today.

I bought my 1985 RV in Texas and registered it in Calif in 2005. I had to pay my mechanic to make it Calif compliant at that time. It passed smog in 2007, and is now due for 2009, However, Calif has added additional smog safety pass requirements, something to do with new headers and other stuff. all to the tune of about $3000. Even though it passes the emissions test, it does not pass the other technical and functional tests.. ugh.

Now I only really drive it to BMan and back, so if this was needed for something I drove more often, I'd suck it up, and I am unemployed, so I really can't spend money now. And the rig is not worth much more than that... I think I can get an extension to cover me during Bman, but... then what do I do?

so I am wondering if I could register it in another state, such as Nevada or Arizona, or even Oregon.

any suggestions... otherwise, I will need to just sell it out of state. I love my rig, and my mechanic says it is in great shape, it is perfect for my needs on playa... I hate to part with her, I'd rather register her out of state if that works...

First off, I am trying to get a handle on the temperature range while there. Many people point out that they do NOT open the windows on their RV's to keep the dust out. Does this mean that it gets so hot inside that you are basically running your A/C all day? I am asking because I will be in an RV with a 4KV generator that could consume as much as a gallon of fuel per hour! That sounds like you are packing in a LOT of fuel in 5 gal. plastic tanks. Some posts say that you MUST open a window slightly for the A/C to work properly. So, can someone elaborate on the actual temperatures experienced there, and how you balance the fuel/comfort ratio.
I have also seen comments about using cello, old sheets, etc., to cover seats, chairs, etc. So what about your beds? Do you just face the fact that sleeping is going to be a little gritty while you are there, are does anyone have any suggestions on keeping the dust out of your bed?
I am coming from SLC and have decided to spend Sunday night in Gerlach or Fernley, gas and water up, and come to the playa Monday morning. Thanks for the advice; I just feel I can get a better lay of the land if I arrive during the day.

Deep cycle batteries, probably kirkland, maybe something else, but money is more of an issue than long life. I want to run the fridge, lights, etc, off of the batter(ies)y via the inverter, and charge the batteries via the gennie. That way, I can be selective in my noise generation and neighbor annoyance.
I'm having a swamp cooler installed on the roof of my tiny trailer, and the unit will go through 2-4 gallons of water per day. If I run the unit on "low", I'll get by closer to the 2 gallon side. My tiny trailer also has a tiny water reservoir of 10 gallons so I won't make it through the week with one "fill up".

I've got a crazy idea and need advice:
I have two sinks. I really only use one. If I divert the drain line on the second sink to become a "fill sink" for the reservoir, I would have a very easy time of draining cooler water and melted ice directly into the tank. I would need to add a second water pump according to the RV service guys.

Is this nuts? Am I on crack? Should I just find an easier way to fill the tank using the external fill trough? Does anyone have a suggestion for filling that stupid outside trough?

I guess I could buy a coleman sink set-up and then drain that directly into the fill trough. Sort of a "big fat funnel".

We've looked at little dorm-style fridges, approximately 3 cubic feet, which would fit in our little trailer, and hold plenty of food for us for the burn and our other little trips.

A couple of problems/questions that I'm aware of, and probably more I'm not aware of, pop up.
1. I can't figure out the peak power demands of these things. They are rated at 1.5 amps, 120 volts, which would mean 180 watts, right? However, I know that they demand more at startup, but I can't find info on how much. Anybody know?

2. If the power demand is say 5x, that means I need 1000 watts at startup. Can I run it off a 1000 watt, or 1500 watt, inverter, hooked up to a deep cycle? Or even my car battery, since they have a higher peak for cranking? We have part time access to a quiet gennie, which could be used to charge the battery, and run off battery power the rest of the time.

3. What else do I need to know? Suggestion, critiques, ideas?

I was under the impression that tent trailers (as I've always called them) won't do well enough against the dust and wind of the Black Rock desert. Anybody have experience with these? Should I be considering this type of trailer? They certainly appear to be cheaper!
I've been browsing Craigslist looking for something that suits us. I found one - it's a 14ft 1965 Aristocrat. Nada guide only goes back to 1975, so I couldn't get a valuation there. I thought I'd ask you all what you think:

The guy is asking $1400 and told me this: "It has fridge, oven, stove, heater. Has plug in electricity and can run on 12 volt if battery installed. Has toilet but not sure how or if it works. That's the only thing wrong with the trailer. The interior is really nice for its age (1965) no scratches or leaks. It was stored in doors when I purchased it so it's in good shape. Need to sell soon because I live in a gated community and can no longer store it."

Pictures of it can be seen here: http://s597.photobucket.com/albums/tt60/smeeed/Aristocrat%20Trailer/

In addition, it's been crapping out quite a bit, especially on Playa during Juplaya. I'm thinkin' of getting a new genset. Now I already know I don't want one of the cheap home depot specials, but is there a genset that puts about 4-5k out that can handle the desert environment at a reasonable price? Does it make sense to rent a genset, such as a larger one that powers a whole camp? Anyone know what those cost for the week?

I get paid through the mail by clients. For this plan to work I need to be able to receive mail. I have found a remailing service which opens and scans any incoming mail, and then you can view the scanned copy online. They will forward any item, such as checks, which you want to have in your possession. This seems like a workable solution.

I am wondering what solutions people who live in their RV's have come up with to receiving mail. Are there any particular mail forwarding services that you recommend? How do you establish a local mailing address for mail to be forwarded to, if you stay for a while? etc.
This is my annual suggestion that each of you planning to bring your RV to the Playa do a thorough shakedown run so you have time to fix things that will - inevitably - need fixing.
Its only 55 days till the call home pulls us dustward. Take your rig on an overnight run, and soon. (Its not such a bad way to spend a few days!) Its amazing how many little things you find that can turn into big things on the Playa. A leaky tank or valve, a bad tire, a battery that doesn’t hold a charge after sitting for a few months, an AC unit that needs a recharge, a generator that won't run properly... all these things can cause inconvenience (or worse!) when dry-docked for a week. Fire up your fridge. Does it cool??? If you wait till a few weeks before your journey home, are you sure you can find the parts, or a shop with the time, to fix whatever problems arise?!?!? If you discover problems the day you plan to leave, or while on your way, ... well... nuff' said.
Check your spares box and tool kit. Check your tires!!! Most pass their useful life long before the tread is gone. Check the batteries in your CO2 and Propane warning sensors!!!
A few hours spent now can translate in to a far more enjoyable burn.
See you all in the dust,
Lazlo

Removed old, bad speedometer cables - replaced with new ones - now it wont start whatsoever. Wont engage the starter.... figured there was a bad spot in the starting armature/brushes (it's been starting just fine, until today that is). Pulled starter and bench tested - passed - sparks and good whir. Put back, and still nothing - just the click click, then dead silence as the key rotates through to start position. Looked at starter switch, all looked ok - will remove tomorrow and run resistance tests to see if I can determine if that is bad, but I doubt it is. No blown fuses.
and the conclusion was .... must have a really good filter... so...

I used a $10furnace filter and it clogged and went bad after 3 days...
dont know if it was the sun or just the dust but it started falling apart as well as being all clogged up... I could not have blown it out... it would have come apart...

an aluminum metalized filter that can be washed out??? would it catch all the little fine particals..

some sort of water bath???
do I need a filter at all??? the swamp cooler mfg said the water and media should filter it out but that sounds like a great big mess to me.... my media is this blocky paper stuff... real thick... 12" or so...

When I bought my new home, the guy mentioned that I should dump the tanks soon, and so I would like to take care of that. Does anyone know of a place close to San Francisco where I can do it?

Also, what is the general procedure, and are there any other tips or tricks that I should be aware of?

OH - and aaaaalso, where would there be an RV store kinda thing, where a person (suck as, you know - me) might find various small replacement parts such as running light covers and other cool stuff?

Thank you so much in advance!

I had an 80W solar panel hooked up to her at Burning Man with a charge controller and a 30 amp fuse by Wednesday. The engine battery and coach battery were setup in a parallel. By Thursday the lights worked intermittently. I had LED's arrays installed in all the dome light fixtures (not sure if this had anything to do with it).

None of the dome lights work now. The coach battery shows a full charge but none of the light fixtures are showing a charge. The fuses and the breaker panel have been checked and still no go.From this I can only assume there is a short somewhere in the internal wiring.

It comes with a three blade fan and I upgraded to the five blade which was a mistake for the playa. The trick during white out is to run the unit on high to hurl lots of water onto incoming air filter, but not blow more air into the cabin than the filter can clean. We closed the vents to restrict airflow and found that the rv air was kept clean by this slightly positive pressure of filtered air. All other windows and vents were closed. Will be putting stock fan back into reduce air flow. Filter and housing need to have playa mud removed daily in white out conditions. Uses 60 watts of 12v electricity, and solar panels ran cooler all burning man. We used ice melt to provide the 3-5 gallons a day consumed by running full time in hot /dry desert. Not cheap, but an rv that's got dust free air to breath sure is a treat in a white out.
ps whole freakin thing is still full of dust of coarse, that's the playa.

Sorry to shout... no, really... but if you're taking an RV to the playa this year, spend some time this week to test everything you intend to use. Check all the systems for potential problems; electrical (a short can kill a battery, or start a fire and kill you), plumbing (leaks stink and are not cool), propane (one word ... Boom), tires (!!! if they are worn, have been stored under inflated for too long, or are more than 5 years old, change them), ... you get the picture. Check your batteries, run your generator for an hour or so to make certain its working properly, and take the RV for a shakedown run. An overnighter is preferable, but even a few hour drive is better than nothing. Look for loose or broken parts, make sure it drives like its supposed to, and take someone along to walk around inside while your driving (carefully) to listen for rattles or wind noise where they shouldn't be. If you do it now, and find something, you have time to fix it. If you find a problem on the way, or worse yet on the Playa, that can mess up your whole experience. And bring an assortment of spare parts: hoses, oil, bulbs, some clamps and misc hardware, and some tools. Radical self reliance means fixing your rig if something goes wrong. Every year, people's trips are interrupted, or destroyed, by heading out with an untested rig. Just do it!!!

Howdy folks,

I saw there was a topic about buying off of craigslist, so I thought I'd post my experiences.

Although I had free access to a motorhome in years past, that option went away in 2006, so my friends and I explored alternatives like carports and stand-alone gennies. My BF put his foot down after the three-day dust storm in 2007, so we started looking at travel trailers on craigslist after a friend bought a toy hauler.

Since we really only planned on using it one week out of the year, we did not want to spend a lot of money on it. A friend offered us space to store it year 'round, so that also wouldn't be an issue.

I found some checklists floating around the web, for things you should ascertain during your initial inspection, so off we went, clip board in hand, to look at some bargains we thought we had found.

The first was a mess. Old, rusting, dilapidated. We didn't stay long after seeing the interior.

The second one sounded much better on paper. About 10 years old, but kept in good shape. After making an appointment to see it, and mentioning that we would like to see all systems demo'd, the owner never showed up at the property it was stowed at to show it to us. We did a walk-around though, and liked what we saw. The trailer had no battery though, and before we purchased it we should have insisted that he demonstrate that all the systems worked.

Let me just re-state that little gem...BE SURE TO GET A DEMO OF ALL SYSTEMS & APPLIANCES! The 12v system, the water pump, the heater, the fridge, etc. No battery? Bring one, or make them get one. No propane? Same thing. Always thank them for the kind assurances that everything is fine, but quietly insist on seeing proof.

We saw similar make/models for sale on-line in the $6,000 - $8,000 range so we suspected it had issues, sight unseen. If something doesn't work, don't walk away. It can be a negotiating point. We think the owner thought he was getting as much as he could expect (maybe a little higher) for it.

Based on the apparent condition, and the owner's hemming & hawwing about demo'ing the system, we negotiated what we thought was a bargain ($3000). Once we got it off the lot, we started taking inventory of the issues and set ourselves a budget ($500) for major repairs.

We were pleasantly surprised to find the trailer already had four levelers/stabilizers on it's frame. We were even happier to find the crank tucked away in a little cubby hole. It had sway bar attachments (but no sway bars). The frame, roof, and walls looked good.

Here's our "issues" list: The tires looked iffy, the 12v system worked when plugged in but not when connected to a battery, two windows were badly broken, no A/C, no curtains, broken bathroom vent on the roof, leaking kitchen sink, and there were no keys to the door. We were worried and wondered if we had bitten off more than we could chew.

Once we purchased a battery, we were able to trace the 12v issue to a simple cut wire, and one soldering job later, everything powered up fine. If someone less handy with a voltmeter & basic electrical knowledge had bought the trailer, they'd probably have been screwed. Time to fix: 30 minutes, cost was less than $1

Curtains: bought some premade ones at a thrift store, and velcro'd them over the windows. Total cost was about $50 but we wound up with almost total black-out curtains, which worked great on the playa.

Window repair -- what a royal, time consuming pain! It took me a week to track down the manufacturer of the jalousie/crank windows but they wanted $45 for the pane + $65 for shipping FOR EACH WINDOW. Instead I went to a local plastics shop, and had them cut me replacements out of acrylic. Total cost was $85. It took a couple hours because I had to remove existing windows to make templates, and then put everything back together. Still, it wasn't tough, or rocket science.

A/C -- Roof mount versions retail from $700 - $2000. I bought a room AC unit at costco, jury rigged a duct from it into the RV, and had a workable system for $70. As an added bonus, having the AC located outside resulted in whisper quiet operation when run off the camp genny.

We were surprised to find that the fridge works better than any RV fridge I've ever seen -- we had to keep dialing it down to prevent juice & milk from freezing!

Tires -- They showed some cracking in the sidewalls so we replaced them all, just to have peace of mind before driving 700 miles to the playa. Probably the best $210 we spent in a long time. It improved the trailer's towability also.

The vent was about $10 to repair, although it took about an hour to scrape all the caulk off the old one in order to get to the screws. Another tough-sounding job that was actually easy and cheap.

New kitchen sink -- $20. Didn't even have to replace everything, just the faucet to stop the leak. Otherwise this would have been a much bigger task.

Replacing the sway bars & suv ball hitch -- about $50 (craigslist again!)

A locksmith charged $40 to re-key the lock. It took about an hour to get the lock off the door, get it to him for fixing, and then replacing. A bargain!

Bottom line, we spent this past burn in air conditioned luxury. And it didn't cost us an arm and a leg. It's definitely doable!

Cheers
In fact I made this posting from the RV.

Had the dash AC recharged last Saturday, blows nice and cold now. And drove her a few hundred miles this week just to make certain everything was OK. So I can now officially say she’s headed to BRC this weekend. I just cancelled my back-up rig. Assuming everything goes as planned, I’ll be in “...and then there’s only LOVE” at 9:00 and Esplanade Monday mid-morning.

See you on the Playa.

Greetings,

Long time RV burner, first time poster...

I've got a Honda EX4500 generator which I bought new several years ago. It's ran flawlessly up until the past few months, where it now runs for a bit of time, then the RPM's begin to pulse up and down and then it dies.

This Generator has been to the playa several times as well as other harsh environments, but I've always changed the oil and cleaned the air cleaner out regularly.

It runs fine sometimes for 20 minutes, sometimes for 8+ hours, then starts it's way down the pulsing doom. Restarts right back up and you're good for another 20min-8 hours. It's got plenty of fresh gas.

Prior to this happening it did sit outside in the winter weather for one season since I couldn't access it in the garage if the power went out at home and I needed it. I won't make that mistake again.

Guesses I've had that didn't fix it:

1. Fuel filter. Gas seems to come into the little clear plastic bowl just fine and isn't dirty.
2. Vapor Lock on the fuel tank: Nope. ran it with the gas cap off and it happened as well.
3. Recent oil change and confirmed correct oil level.

other bits of info:
After sitting outside it was a bit dirty. I disassembled and cleaned the carb, air filter, oil change, etc. The motor fired up but AC was not produced. I then did the "zap the brushes with 12V" trick to repolarize the brushes, which returned the AC generator functionality.

Any other suggestions on things to try? It's functional, but annoying given we're hosting parties on playa all week and I'm supposed to generate the sound and lighting power...

Thanks!

I have an Atwood water heater in my 84 hazy daze. It doesn't seem to work unless I open the panel on the outside of the RV.

What I mean by it doesn't work is it doesn't heat the water. It ignites the flame turns on for a minute and then shuts off and the red light on the instrument panel says the water is ready. But I don't get any hot water.

However, if I open the outside panel and then turn the flame stays on longer and heats the water. It even seems to stay on to long until I close the panel and then it turns itself off.

I'm really inexperienced with this type of thing and a googling hasn't come up with anything. Can someone recommend anything to try or look into?

Thanks.
Sorry, no pictures this time. Forgot the camera yesterday... DOH!

Spent pretty much all day yesterday at the rig. Things are moving along nicely, but if they actually finish tomorrow, I’d be flabbergasted. I’m thinking Tuesday at the earliest and probably Wednesday. There are just too many little things left to do. I’ll deal....

I went out yesterday to do 3 things: add some individual circuit fusing to the new monitor panel; install the replacement bumpers (R&A “lost” mine) and commission and test the satellite uplink system. Got it all done!!! Everything seems to be working properly except for the dash AC which appears to need a refrigerant recharge. That’s for later next week, but won’t kill me either way. Also did a complete walk around checking for hatch seals, latch integrity, etc., and noticed that some of the screws that hold the rooftop ladder had pulled out, probably when it got hit at R&A. I’ll fill the holes with epoxy tomorrow, and then re-drill and seal the screws Tuesday.
Checked all the circuits and systems and got 100% OK on everything, so I’m psyched. We’re taking her on a shakedown drive next weekend, then let the playafying commence.
I used to take my RV to a local RV shop that charged a bunch. Well, one of the mechanics quit and is doing freelance work.

Sooooo, that means he's available. He'll come to your place if it's not too far (he lives in El Cerrito), or you can drop it off and he'll work on it at his place if it's a bigger job OR he'd probably even stay wherever your RV is and work on it there if it'll take a couple of days - he's got an RV too.

He does everything from body work to engines to electrical and he does good work for darn cheap. He's even come out to do emergency calls for me when my rig wouldn't start.

Give him a call:
